The Tennessee Titans have made NFL history by signing defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons to a massive contract extension, cementing him as the highest-paid interior defensive lineman in league history. The deal, which averages over $23.5 million per season, includes $66 million in guaranteed money and resets the market for players at his position.
Simmons, a first-round pick in 2019, has been the cornerstone of the Titans' defense since entering the league. Despite the team overhauling its roster this offseason, including trading away star wide receiver A.J. Brown and letting several veteran defenders walk, Simmons remained the one constant in Nashville. His combination of power, quickness, and relentless motor made him an indispensable piece for general manager Ran Carthon and head coach Mike Vrabel.
The new contract reflects Simmons' production over four seasons, where he has recorded 21 sacks, 40 tackles for loss, and 56 quarterback hits. He also earned his first Pro Bowl selection in 2021 and was named second-team All-Pro in 2022.
For the Titans, locking up Simmons was a no-brainer. He is the type of disruptive force that offenses must game-plan around, and his leadership in the locker room is equally valuable. With the team in transition, keeping a homegrown star like Simmons sends a clear message that the Titans are still building for contention, not rebuilding.
