The Longhorns just got a whole lot stronger for the 2027 cycle. Landen Williams-Callis, a five-star running back out of Texas, has officially committed to the program. The news broke over the weekend, and it immediately reshapes what Steve Sarkisian and his staff are building for the future.
Williams-Callis is not just another name on the board. He is the kind of runner who changes how a defense plans its week. At 6 feet tall and around 210 pounds, he has the size to run through arm tackles, but he also shows the burst to bounce outside and take a screen the distance. His high school tape is full of long runs where he makes the first defender miss and then outruns the secondary. That combination of power and speed is rare, and it is why every major program in the country was after him.
For Texas, this commitment is a statement. The Longhorns have been recruiting at a high level since Sarkisian took over, but landing a back of this caliber this early in the cycle sends a clear message to the rest of the Big 12 and the country. It also helps with future recruiting. Other top prospects see a guy like Williams-Callis choosing Austin, and that makes them take a closer look.
The coaching staff is expected to use him as a workhorse. He has the vision to run between the tackles and the patience to let blocks develop. Some scouts have compared his style to a bigger version of Bijan Robinson, which is high praise given what Robinson did in Austin before moving on to the NFL. Williams-Callis still has a couple of seasons of high school ball left, but he is already showing the maturity and work ethic that should make the transition to college smooth.
Texas fans have every reason to be excited. This is the kind of player who can anchor a backfield for three years and become a focal point of the offense. The Longhorns are not just adding talent. They are adding a leader who will likely arrive on campus with a chip on his shoulder and something to prove.
