The Minnesota Twins have reinstated right-handed pitcher Garrett Acton from the injured list and immediately optioned him to Triple-A St. Paul. The move clears a spot on the active roster as the team continues to shuffle its bullpen depth.
Acton had been sidelined with a shoulder issue that kept him out of game action for a stretch. The Twins had been monitoring his progress closely, and after a series of rehab appearances, the coaching staff decided he was healthy enough to return to competitive pitching. However, with the big league bullpen currently settled, the decision was made to send him down to get regular work rather than have him sit idle in the majors.
The 27-year-old has yet to appear in a game for Minnesota this season. He was claimed off waivers from the Oakland Athletics back in November, and the organization has been working on refining his delivery and pitch mix. In his minor league career, Acton has shown solid strikeout numbers but has struggled with control at times. The hope is that consistent innings at Triple-A will help him find a rhythm and force his way back into the major league picture later in the summer.
For now, the Twins will continue with their current group of relievers, while Acton remains a depth option just a phone call away.
