Illinois Governor JB Pritzker joined local officials and community leaders on Wednesday to cut the ribbon on the newly completed SCHEELS Sports Park, a state-of-the-art athletic complex poised to transform Springfield’s tourism and recreation landscape. The facility, which spans multiple acres and features top-tier fields and courts, is expected to generate an estimated $25 million in annual economic activity and attract approximately 250,000 visitors each year.
During the ceremony, Governor Pritzker highlighted the park’s potential to drive growth in the region, emphasizing its role in creating jobs, supporting local businesses, and drawing families from across the Midwest. The complex is designed to host regional tournaments, youth leagues, and amateur sporting events, filling a long-standing gap in central Illinois’ sports infrastructure.
Local tourism officials noted that the influx of visitors will boost hotel bookings, restaurant patronage, and retail spending, providing a significant lift to Springfield’s economy. The project was funded through a combination of public and private investments, with the state contributing to infrastructure improvements around the site.
“This is more than just a sports facility—it’s an investment in our community’s future,” Pritzker said. “SCHEELS Sports Park will bring people together, support healthy lifestyles, and put Springfield on the map as a premier destination for athletic competition.”
The park is now open to the public, with a full calendar of events already scheduled through the upcoming seasons.
