Mount Vernon school sports fans could soon have a drier place to watch games if voters approve a capital levy that includes funding for covered stadium seating and a new multipurpose turf field.
The proposal aims to address long-standing concerns about weather exposure at outdoor athletic events. Currently, spectators endure rain and harsh conditions with little protection, and the district says the upgrades would make games more comfortable and accessible for students, families, and community members.
The multipurpose turf field would expand available space for several sports and physical education programs, reducing scheduling conflicts and allowing more consistent use throughout the year. District officials say the improvements would benefit not only athletes but also marching bands, youth programs, and community groups that rely on school facilities.
Supporters argue the investment is overdue and would bring Mount Vernon's athletic infrastructure in line with neighboring districts. Critics have raised questions about the cost and timing, and some residents want more detail on how the levy funds would be managed.
The measure will appear on the upcoming ballot, and district leaders are encouraging residents to review the plan and participate in the vote. If approved, construction could begin after the current school year, with the new seating and field expected to be ready for use within two years.
