Joc Pederson Declines $18.5M Option, Hits Free Agency

October 31, 2026 - 10:25

Veteran slugger Joc Pederson has declined his $18.5 million option with the Texas Rangers and will test the open market this winter. The decision comes after a productive 2026 campaign in which Pederson once again proved he can swing a potent bat against right-handed pitching.

Pederson, 34, remains best known for his role in the 2021 World Series run, where his pinch-hit heroics and clubhouse presence became a defining part of that championship team. His ability to deliver in high-leverage spots has kept him in demand even as he has settled into a part-time role in recent years.

The move raises an obvious question for Atlanta: should the Braves bring him back? Pederson spent part of the 2021 season with Atlanta and was a key contributor during that title push. His left-handed power would fit a lineup that values platoon advantages, and his postseason experience carries real weight in a clubhouse with October aspirations.

At this stage of his career, Pederson is not an everyday fixture, but he does not need to be. A short-term deal with a clear role could appeal to both sides. Atlanta has shown willingness to add proven bats on flexible contracts, and Pederson's familiarity with the organization makes a reunion plausible.

Expect several teams to check in on Pederson in the coming weeks. His market should develop quickly once the top free agents come off the board.
