It might not be possible to underreact to what the Browns put onto the football field in Week One against the Jacksonville Jaguars. The performance was so thoroughly broken that any attempt to soften the blow would amount to lying about what actually happened.
Cleveland entered the season with expectations of competing. What unfolded instead was a display of football that raised questions at every position. The offense could not sustain drives. The defense could not get off the field. Special teams offered no spark. Jacksonville controlled the game from the opening series and never let go.
Calling this a bad loss undersells it. Bad losses happen when a team plays well for a half and fades. This was a full four quarters of dysfunction, with mistakes compounding instead of correcting. Coaches and players alike admitted afterward that the standard was not met.
The temptation now is to write it off as one week. That is fair in a long season. But pretending this was just a slow start ignores how far the Browns have to climb before they look like a competent team again.
