The rematch everyone wanted delivered a familiar result, at least for one night. Texas rode a blistering start to a 7-3 victory over Texas Tech in Game 1 of the Women's College World Series championship series, putting the Longhorns one win away from another national title.
Texas came out swinging from the first pitch. The Longhorns stacked up four runs in the opening inning, capitalizing on a pair of Texas Tech errors and timely hitting. The early surge knocked the Red Raiders' starter out of the game before she could record four outs. By the end of the third inning, Texas had stretched the lead to 7-0, and the outcome felt all but decided.
Texas Tech tried to claw back. A solo home run in the fourth inning got them on the board, and they added two more runs in the fifth to cut the deficit to four. But the Longhorns' pitching staff settled down after that, retiring the final seven batters in order to close out the win.
The Red Raiders now face elimination. They will need to win Game 2 on Tuesday to force a winner-take-all Game 3. Texas, meanwhile, looks to close out the series and repeat as champions. For Texas Tech, the path to avenging last year's loss just got a lot steeper.
