Three Key Storylines as Cavaliers Open Preseason Against Celtics

October 8, 2026 - 03:54

The Cleveland Cavaliers begin their preseason schedule tomorrow night with a matchup against the Boston Celtics. While exhibition games do not count in the standings, this first outing offers a useful look at how the team is shaping up before the regular season begins.

The biggest question surrounds the starting lineup. Cleveland made changes in the offseason, and coach Kenny Atkinson now has to decide how to blend returning core players with new additions. Tomorrow's rotations should give a hint about who earns early trust and who still has ground to cover.

Health is another factor worth tracking. Several players dealt with injuries last season, and the preseason is a chance to test their conditioning in live game action. Minutes will likely be limited for veterans, but any sign of lingering issues would be a concern.

Finally, the bench battle matters. Roster spots are not guaranteed, and young players plus training camp invitees will be fighting for roles. A strong showing against Boston could shift the coaching staff's thinking.

Boston, meanwhile, brings a deep and experienced roster. That makes this a real test rather than a warmup. Tipoff is set for tomorrow evening.
