Andrew Painter looked sharp in his latest rehab start, a clear sign that the young right-hander is working his way back toward the majors. He threw with confidence, mixed his pitches well, and got through four innings without much trouble. For a team desperate for rotation help, that was the best news of the night.
But the good feeling didn't last. Once Painter left the game, the Phillies' bullpen took over and the lead slipped away in familiar fashion. A late-inning collapse turned what should have been a positive step into another frustrating loss, this one tagged to the No. 5 spot in the order that has been a black hole all season.
The offense did enough to win, putting up runs early and giving the pitching staff some cushion. But the relievers couldn't hold it. Walks, a couple of hard-hit balls, and a defensive miscue or two undid the effort. By the time the final out came, the Phillies were left staring at another game they should have had.
Painter's progress is real, and that matters. He's throwing harder, locating better, and showing the poise that made him a top prospect. But the bullpen remains a glaring weakness, and no amount of starting pitching depth can fix that if the late innings keep slipping away. The Phillies need answers there, and soon, or these kinds of nights will keep repeating.
