The Pittsburgh Steelers are putting the finishing touches on minicamp, but the front office remains active in fine-tuning the roster. Several moves over the past few days reflect the team's effort to address depth and competition ahead of training camp.
Pittsburgh has signed a pair of defensive backs to bolster the secondary, adding experience to a group that saw some turnover this offseason. One of the new arrivals is a veteran cornerback who spent last season on a practice squad, while the other is a safety who has bounced between teams in recent years. Both players will have a chance to compete for special teams roles and backup duties.
To make room on the 90-man roster, the Steelers released a wide receiver and an undrafted rookie linebacker. The receiver showed flashes during organized team activities but struggled with consistency in minicamp drills. The linebacker, an undrafted free agent, failed to stand out in a crowded position group.
The team also placed one player on the reserve/retired list, a move that frees up a spot without counting against the active roster limit. That player, a backup offensive lineman, decided to step away from football after a brief stint in Pittsburgh.
With minicamp now in the rearview mirror, the Steelers will take a short break before reporting to training camp in late July. The recent shuffling suggests the coaching staff is still evaluating which pieces fit best, and more moves are likely as the summer progresses.
