Few stories from the 2026 NFL Draft cycle have generated more confusion and frustration than what happened to Diego Pavia. After one of the most remarkable seasons in recent college football history, the former Vanderbilt Commodores quarterback not only went undrafted but was also largely ignored by teams in the subsequent free-agent frenzy. Now, outspoken sports commentator Skip Bayless has weighed in with a statement that is turning heads across the football world.
“Diego Pavia is the most disrespected player I have seen in years,” Bayless declared on his latest broadcast. “This kid led Vanderbilt to victories nobody thought possible. He played with a fire and a chip on his shoulder that you simply cannot teach. And what did the NFL do? They yawned. They looked past him because he doesn’t fit the cookie-cutter mold of a 6-foot-5 pocket passer. It’s a travesty.”
Bayless went on to argue that Pavia’s intangibles—his leadership, improvisational skills, and sheer will to win—should have outweighed concerns about his size or arm strength. He compared Pavia’s college heroics to some of the most iconic underdog stories in sports history, insisting that the NFL’s scouting establishment missed the mark entirely.
While several teams have since invited Pavia to rookie minicamps on a tryout basis, Bayless remains unconvinced that the quarterback will get a fair shot. “Mark my words,” Bayless added. “If someone gives Diego Pavia a real opportunity, he will make them look like geniuses. And everyone else will look like fools for letting him fall through the cracks.”
