The Buffalo Bills locked in running back James Cook with a four-year, $46 million contract this month, a deal that looks like a steal next to the massive paydays other teams handed out at the position. Cook, who led the NFL in rushing last season, isn't focused on proving he deserved more. He says the only number that matters is a championship.
Cook spoke to reporters on Tuesday and made it clear that personal milestones are not the goal. He said he wants to help the Bills win games and finally get over the hump in the playoffs. The team has come up short in the AFC divisional round in each of the last two seasons, and Cook believes the offense has the pieces to change that.
The contract, which averages $11.5 million per year, looks modest compared to the deals signed by Saquon Barkley and Josh Jacobs earlier in the month. But Cook said he is happy with the security and the chance to stay in Buffalo. He added that he never worried about the negotiation process, trusting his agent and the front office to get it done.
Now, with training camp on the horizon, Cook says he is fully healthy and ready to take on an even bigger role in the passing game. He wants to be on the field in every situation, not just on early downs. That kind of versatility, he believes, is what will push the Bills past the Chiefs and Bengals when it matters most.
