The Indianapolis Colts kicked off their preseason schedule with a matchup against the New England Patriots, and all eyes were on rookie quarterback Riley Leonard. The former Notre Dame standout got his first taste of NFL action, and while the stats weren't eye-popping, there were plenty of encouraging signs for the coaching staff to build on.
Leonard played into the second quarter, finishing the day completing 6 of 10 passes for 58 yards. He also showed off the mobility that made him a dual-threat star in college, rushing three times for 21 yards. His longest gain on the ground came on a scramble where he picked up 12 yards, showing the burst and vision that could make him a weapon in short-yardage situations.
The most impressive part of his outing was his decision-making. He didn't force any throws into tight windows, and he showed a willingness to take what the defense gave him. There was one particular third-down conversion where he stepped up in the pocket, avoided a free rusher, and delivered a strike to a crossing receiver for a first down. It was the kind of play that shows growth in reading defenses, something he worked on heavily during spring practices.
Of course, there were rookie moments too. On one drive, he held the ball a beat too long and took a sack that pushed the Colts out of field goal range. But he bounced back on the next possession, leading a methodical drive that ended with a short touchdown pass to a backup tight end. The drive was a mix of quick passes and smart checkdowns, exactly what offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter wants to see.
Head coach Shane Steichen said after the game that Leonard handled the huddle well and showed good command of the offense. The plan is to give him more reps in the next preseason game, likely against the Arizona Cardinals. For now, the rookie looks like he belongs, and that is a solid first step.
The Colts will take the positives from this one and get back to work. Leonard's development remains a key storyline to watch as the preseason rolls on.
