The Indianapolis Colts dropped a heartbreaker in Week 2, falling to the Kansas City Chiefs in overtime. The game came down to the final possession, and the Colts could not close it out.
Indianapolis started slowly on offense. The running game struggled to find room early, and the passing attack was inconsistent on third down. That put pressure on the defense, which held up for long stretches but eventually wore down.
The Chiefs leaned on Patrick Mahomes, who made several key throws in critical moments. Kansas City converted multiple third and long situations, extending drives that should have ended. That proved to be the difference.
The Colts had chances to win in regulation. A late drive stalled near midfield, and the team settled for a long field goal attempt that missed. In overtime, the offense went three and out on its only possession, giving Mahomes the ball with a short field.
Defensively, the Colts generated pressure at times but could not sack Mahomes when it mattered. The secondary had breakdowns in coverage, especially on crossing routes.
Special teams also had issues. A costly penalty on a return wiped out good field position.
The loss drops the Colts to a frustrating start. Cleanup is needed on third down, in the red zone, and in late game situations. The margin between winning and losing in this league is small, and Indianapolis let this one slip away.
