Patriots executive: Working alongside son ‘really special’

The New England Patriots have added a unique family dynamic to their front office. Alonzo Highsmith, a longtime NFL personnel executive, now works side by side with his son, A.J. Highsmith, after the younger Highsmith joined the team's personnel department in 2025. For the father, the arrangement goes beyond typical business.

"It is really special," Alonzo Highsmith said of the opportunity. He noted that sharing the daily grind of scouting, film study, and roster evaluation with his son has brought a new level of purpose to his work. The elder Highsmith has spent decades in the league, holding roles with the Green Bay Packers, Cleveland Browns, and most recently the Seattle Seahawks before landing in New England. A.J. followed a similar path, working his way up through scouting internships and entry-level positions.

While the Patriots are known for a demanding culture, Highsmith emphasized that the father-son bond has made the transition smoother. He said they challenge each other on player evaluations but keep the debates professional. The pair now spends long hours together in the team's facility, often driving home discussing the same prospects. For Alonzo, watching his son earn his place in the league is the real reward. He said he never pushed A.J. into football, but seeing him carve out his own career in the same building is a feeling he cannot put into words. The Patriots hope the Highsmiths' combined experience and trust will sharpen their draft and free-agent decisions for years to come.
