Detroit Lions safety Kerby Joseph began training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list, but that has not dampened his outlook on the season ahead. While head coach Dan Campbell said he would feel comfortable if Joseph were ready by Week 1, the fifth-year defensive back is aiming much higher than that.
Joseph spoke with reporters recently and made it clear that his confidence in his recovery is strong. He said he is super optimistic about his health and where things are headed. That is a more aggressive timeline than what Campbell has publicly suggested, but Joseph seems unfazed by the caution coming from the coaching staff.
The Lions are counting on Joseph to be a key piece of their secondary after a breakout season. His ability to read quarterbacks and create turnovers has made him one of the more promising young safeties in the league. If he can return to form quickly, it would be a major boost for a defense that is trying to take the next step.
For now, Joseph is focused on the day-to-day work. He is not rushing things, but he is not holding back his expectations either. That kind of confidence could be exactly what the Lions need as they push toward another playoff run.
