High school baseball: Southern Section playoff results and updated schedule

The CIF Southern Section baseball playoffs continued Friday, May 22, with a full slate of quarterfinal games across multiple divisions. Several top seeds survived, while a few lower-ranked teams pulled off upsets to advance to the semifinal round.

In Division 1, top-seeded Corona held off a late rally to defeat Harvard-Westlake 5-3. The Panthers will now face No. 4 Orange Lutheran, which shut out JSerra 2-0 behind a complete-game performance from its ace. The other semifinal pits No. 3 Huntington Beach against No. 2 Mater Dei. The Oilers edged Santa Margarita 4-3 in extra innings, while the Monarchs cruised past Servite 7-1.

Division 2 saw No. 1 Cypress roll past La Mirada 8-2, setting up a semifinal with No. 5 South Hills, which beat Tesoro 6-4. No. 2 West Ranch also advanced with a 5-1 win over Aliso Niguel and will face No. 3 Thousand Oaks, a 3-2 winner over San Clemente.

Several lower seeds made noise in other divisions. In Division 3, No. 8 Capistrano Valley knocked off top-seeded Villa Park 4-3. No. 7 Simi Valley also advanced, beating No. 2 Camarillo 6-5. The semifinal schedule has been released, with games set for Tuesday, May 26, at neutral sites. Times and locations will be confirmed by each school.

The championship games are scheduled for the following weekend at various venues across Southern California. Teams are now just two wins away from a CIF title.
