Several fans were hurt on Saturday when a sudden storm sent an event tent crashing down near the entrance of West Virginia University's Kendrick Family Ballpark during the Super Regional baseball game. The university confirmed the incident, which unfolded as high winds swept through the Morgantown area.
The tent, set up outside the stadium for concessions and fan gatherings, was not anchored to the ground and collapsed under the force of the gusts. Emergency medical crews on site treated the injured, with a handful of people transported to a local hospital for further evaluation. None of the injuries were reported as life-threatening.
The game itself was delayed for over an hour as the storm passed and cleanup crews worked to secure loose debris. Players and coaches from both West Virginia and their opponent were held in the dugouts until the weather cleared. The university later issued a statement expressing relief that the injuries were not more severe and thanking first responders for their quick action.
The incident highlights the dangers of pop-up storms at outdoor sporting events, where large crowds and temporary structures can turn dangerous in seconds. Officials are reviewing safety protocols ahead of the next scheduled game.
