The latest 2027 mock draft has Detroit addressing a different need while the secondary waits, and that decision says a lot about how the roster is viewed.

Detroit's defensive backfield is the glaring hole on an otherwise competitive roster. The cornerback room lacks a proven shutdown presence, and safety depth has been a quiet concern for two seasons running. Most projections expect the Lions to attack that weakness early. This mock draft goes the other way.

Instead of reaching for a corner in the top ten, the projection sends Detroit help in the trenches, betting that pressure up front can mask coverage limitations. It is a defensible philosophy. A dominant pass rush shortens the time opposing quarterbacks have to exploit young defensive backs, and the Lions have invested heavily in the front seven already. Adding another disruptive body keeps that identity intact.

The tradeoff is obvious. Waiting on secondary help means another year of asking unproven players to hold up against elite receivers. In a division with passing attacks that can stress every level of a defense, that is a real risk. The mock does have Detroit circling back to corner later in the draft, but day three picks rarely step in as immediate starters.

For a team with playoff expectations, the calculus is uncomfortable. The front office has to decide whether the pass rush can carry the load or whether ignoring the secondary is a mistake that costs them in January. This mock draft leans toward the former.
