Colts Training Camp ‘Day 11’: Quick Hits

The skies opened up over Grand Park on Thursday, but the wet conditions did little to slow down a Colts secondary that continues to make life difficult for the team's own receivers. With a steady drizzle falling throughout the session, the defensive backs treated the slippery field as an advantage, jumping routes and breaking up passes with a level of physicality that has become a theme of this camp.

Cornerback Jaylon Jones had his best practice of the summer, reading quarterback Anthony Richardson's eyes on a deep out route and undercutting the throw for what would have been a pick-six in a live game. The defense as a whole fed off that energy, with safety Rodney Thomas II breaking up a third-down pass in the red zone during the final team period. Head coach Shane Steichen said after practice that the rain forced both sides to focus on fundamentals, but he was especially pleased with how the defense handled the football in the wet conditions.

On offense, the day was more about survival than highlight plays. Richardson showed good touch on a screen pass to Jonathan Taylor, but the passing game struggled to find a rhythm on deeper throws. Receiver Michael Pittman Jr. did haul in a contested catch over the middle, shaking off a defender to secure the ball in traffic. The offensive line also had a few hiccups against a blitz-heavy look from the defense, leading to a couple of "sacks" that were called by the officials on the sideline.

Special teams got a workout in the rain as well, with punter Rigoberto Sanchez booming several kicks that pinned the return unit deep in their own territory. Kicker Matt Gay went through his usual routine, connecting on all of his attempts from inside 45 yards, though the wet ball caused one miss from 50-plus. The team will take Friday off before returning to the field for a lighter walkthrough on Saturday, with the preseason opener now just over a week away.
