ACEing Autism through adaptive sports

ACEing Autism through adaptive sports

A growing program is helping children with autism build confidence and coordination through tennis, one rally at a time. ACEing Autism, a national nonprofit, runs structured sessions where kids ages 5 to 18 learn the basics of the sport while working on motor skills, focus, and social interaction.

Each class pairs a child with a trained volunteer coach, keeping the ratio low so instruction can match each player's needs. The drills are simple and repetitive, which helps kids feel safe and successful. But the real goal goes beyond forehands and backhands. Coaches say the sport naturally teaches turn-taking, reading body language, and managing frustration when a ball goes out of bounds.

Parents often report big changes after a few weeks. Kids who were hesitant to leave the car now run to the court. Others who struggled with loud noises or new people start to relax once they understand the routine. The program also gives siblings and caregivers a chance to watch from the sideline, cheering without pressure.

ACEing Autism started with a few local clinics and has since grown to dozens of locations across the country. Organizers emphasize that the sport is adaptable. Rackets can be lighter, balls can be softer, and the pace can slow down. What matters is that every child gets to play, sweat, and feel part of a team.

For many families, the weekly hour becomes a highlight. It is not about winning points. It is about showing up, trying something hard, and leaving with a smile. That is a win no scoreboard can measure.
